    Total Media Center?

i was thinking about the future and what it might hold.
another post got me started on the day that dvd's will end and memory cards will run everything. What do you think would be the ultimate media center?

Im thinking to build one today if you took a decent computer had a tuner card put in it for arial antenna signals and a dvr card for other video recording purposes, installed a couple 500 gig drives(1000 gig/5 gig for a shrunk movie= 200 movies) dvr card would also run necessary video camera etc, internet connection and all run through a wireless mouse and keyboard hooked to a 42" lcd screen and a home reciever for amplification of sound.
you could sit on the couch watch one of 200 movies, check to see who is pulling in the drive checking out ebay ordering dinner all without moving basically
    what do you all think?

you've pretty much described my setup, aside from the internet connection-- i find it unnecessary amongst movies, music, network gaming and hdtv

hmm, you will get fat real soon and might die of cardiac arrest ^_~

in case you dont want to change too much with your current pc, get yourself a receiver for your hifi/tv with ethernet and connect it to an old pc which will function as your multimedia server delivering the data via ethernet to receiver/tv

UncasMS I was about to say the samething, not about the cardiac arrest, but about getting fat quickly. Not only that but my @ss would hurt after awhile, I can't sit for long periods of time.

we are becoming a lazy bunch
i dont have any of this setup i was just thinking about what ever house will have in the future.
ability to store hunderds of movies without dvd's or changing anything queing up what you want in second or surfing the web on your new widescreen lcd monitor you just picked up. basically just integrating the technolgies we have now into one unit. why use dvd's when we have hard drives?
2-500 gig drives can hold what one of those big dvd cases will and you dont have to do all the flipping worry about scratching or having a dvd player for your tv you already have one in the computer. just thinking out loud here.
besides you think surfing on your 19" is cool try a 42" LOL show your freinds how to play movies without putting in a dvd. thats cool

I think that in the not too long future we'll have 200 Gig portable 'pocket' hard drives that could hold 40 movies that you could carry around anywhere and connect to anybodies' TVs( hopefully a 50" HDTV ) via USB!
I don't think we're that far from that technology, now!

But, I still beleive that DVDs will be needed to ensure a 'hardcopy' of your movies.

well if they could email you the movie and the internet wasnt so expensive for a fast connection i could see that happening. on ebay they are already emailing you books and different things you would expect to be on a cd so soon it will be dvd.if you could rent a payper view movie over the phone line through your computer that would work right? because that would be a pretty fast ransfer speed if they could pass a HD signal in real time. by the way i was talking to an SBC guy the other day doing som work on a major road in a fast growing area. i asked him what he was doing he said that they were runnin new lines and they are slowly doing it in different areas to gear up for the things to come. like haveing your tv signals, phone and internet all come through a twisted pair and being able to access all of them at the same time. watch tv in one room surf the web in another and be on the telephone in another over 1 pair of wires. Now thats technology. he said they want to take beat the cable company with what they are doing.

That's pretty much already being done, My DSL comes thru one phone line along with our two phone numbers, and I could add TV services using that same line as well.
Also our cable company is trying to sell us Roadrunner and phone services in addition to our cable TV, thru one cable connection as well.
