Plays DVD but no sound

Hi , Iam new to burnin dvds and when i burn avi files with nero 6.6 it plays in dvd player but dont have any sound what do i need to fix this problem?

Are you just burning the avi's straight to a blank DVD-R disc ?

or

Are you first converting them to DVD format ?
