Convert Canon AVI to Xvid AVI?

Hello all, I am trying to convert AVIs from my Canon Digital Ixus 30 (PowerShot SD200) so they take up less space. They start out as Motion Jpeg (MJPEG) / PCM (640/480/30fps); I'd like them to be XVid/MP3. I am trying to use VirtualDub 1.6.14 / ffdshow (a build from 6th May 2006, taken from Celtic Druid's site).

When I tell VDub to start the conversion (Save as AVI...), it complains:

[E] Error: Cannot start video compression:
An unknown error occurred (may be corrupt data).
    (error code -100)

Any ideas, anyone? Hope this isn't too obvious, but I am a newbie...

    cheers, Andy

Hi, not sure I like Xvid, pretty sure it messed up all the codecs on my system and stopped Windows' system sounds working when I tried it before. I'll give it a try again in a sandbox (good old free Virtual Server!) and see how I get on.

      cheers, Andy
