DVD backup to HDD: best format?

    Hello,

I have a sizeable DVD collection that I'm looking to backup to my HDD to be able to play them without inserting the disc. What is the best format/codec to do this? (I prefer higher quality, but would like some compression instead of .vob files on my HDD)

    Thanks!

    xvid or x264

edit: for conainer mp4 is well suited-- will hold your aac audio streams, subtitles, chapters, and with a little more effort, menus
