Mpg to Avi without DVD?

I dont have a dvd installed onto my new asus raid yet. Have been dld and playing middleman. Saw some samples of titles I did not recognize and went to play them, Silly me...
Tried Quick View Pro (dos) and got an illeg op. Is there something else that can let me view mpg samples without the dvd stuff on my lil puter?
I saw a thread on code to make MP7 do it, but it was over my head.

If the file is in MPEG1 format, simply doubleclicking on the filename should automatically start it playing under Windows Media Player.

If the file is in MPEG2 format, you won't be able to play it without any "dvd stuff" - you'll need to download and install (Register with Windows) the required filters (ivivideo.ax and iviaudio.ax)...

I have installed several players (5) which say that they play MPEG2, and they all tell me that the one I am trying to play is not supported. I am in Win98 and this is in one of the txt files with the sample:

1) Search the numerous postings at these forums by UncasMS, which include a link for these.

OR

2) Click on "DigitalDigest" at the bottom (right in the middle) of this page - and search the DVDDigest and DivXDigest sites.


If, in fact, the files that you've obtained are in MPEG2-SuperVideoCD format (rather than "plain vanilla" MPEG2) you probably won't be able to play them with anything other than a software DVD player, such as WinDVD...

I was so scrambled
I did not know what it was I was asking!
Talk about Lame!
It never occured to me that I should load a DVD app to play the mpg! I ASSumed, those were only for those with the DVD hardware installed!

not sure what kind of MPEG-2 files you have, but the SVCD MPEG-2s I've encoded from AVIs are playable in WMP with the MPEG-2 codec installed (no DVD software necessary)...
