problem with dvdx video

I have never successfully made a divx movie because the software I have downloaded in the past always seemed to malfunction or I just wasn't doing in right. My wife started complaining because I was on the computer too long to learn it all. I then ran across DVDx 1.8 and I was able to make and mpeg and then a VCD. My problem is that the mpeg looks a little jumpy like Godzilla in those old movies. I was thinking maybe it's normal because frames are missing to make it smaller. If it's not normal could someone tell me what other options I need to change? The movie fits perfectly on 2 cd's. Now, it's not the picture quality, but the way it flows. Also can someone tell me what the Mux rate is and what the rendering option means? If I spent the amount of time at work that I do on this I could buy the DVD's. Please help with any incite. Thanks.
