DVD player wont read cd

I just used nero to convert the cd frommpeg to vcd but when I put the cd in my dvd player it wouldn't play it. A friend of mine said it is because the dvd player cant read cd's that aren't silver on the bottom. Is this right or did nero not burn right, and can I buy blank cd's that are silver on the bottom??

If all else fails, most standalones will recognize most brands of R/W CDs...
