    I'm a HUGE N00B FFDSHOW HELP

I got FFDShow as told but now I don't know where to play anything? All I see are a bunch of different config settings but no player or anything?

    How stupid am I?

Please don't feel that way. Ffdshow allows media players or editing programs to open or play most of the media files. For watching with video, I recommend to download and use Media Player Classic and Haali Splitter. They work together with ffdshow beautifully

I have VLC which has been excellent up until now. I can't seem to play Xvid movies with it.

I don't understand how I use Media Splitter?

All I see are settings, I don't know how to integrate it with MPC

First of all, for XviD, I would like to recommend you to download and install Koepi's XviD codec. Please download it from here:

For Haali MKV Splitter, like ffdshow, all you have to do is to install them and when you open any video files such as .mkv, mp4,...with Media Player Plassic, they will jump right out (You can't see them on the Taskbar) and help the player open these files

Please use these free but wonderful free tools. There are many more great tools such as meGUI, StaxRip,... for encoding these formats yourself. Please let us know if you like to know more. Aloha

          Regards

ffdshow basically uses the same libs (libavcodec, libfaad2, libmad, etc.) that VLC does.

VLC uses libavcodec for XviD (ASP MPEG-4) decoding, as does VLC. XviD is just a video codec though. What container are we talking about here? Haali's splitter can handle XviD in avi, mkv, mp4, ogm and maybe TS? VLC has numerous built in parsers.

ffdshow won't make any difference to VLC.
