    adding borders in VirtualDub

I followed Setarip's instructions on adding borders in VirtualDub (see thread: xshawnx Avi -> Svcd 4/10)....

When VirtualDub finished with my Avi...after 3 1/2 hours I ended up with a smaller (in megs), unplayable file

in the thread Setarip was real clear except for:
    3) Set Audio to 'direct stream processing'

    8) Set filter mode to 'precise bicubic'

    11) in video menu select compression and use that used to create the original file

    My experience:
    3) I only have 'direct stream copy' and 'full processing', so I used 'direct stream copy'

    8) I have 3 modes of 'precise bicubic': .60, .75 and 1.0...I selected .75 (what the heck...it was in the middle)

    11) under file information -> video stream: decompressor is Divx Mpeg 4 fast-motion...so that is what I chose for my codec in compression

any idea what I did wrong?

"I only have 'direct stream copy' and 'full processing', so I used 'direct stream copy' "

You made the correct choices. Forgive my mixing up of the terminology. Otherwise, I see nothing in the procedures that should result in an unplayable file.

Perhaps more insight can be gained if you do the following:

    1) Load the ORIGINAL .AVI into VirtualDub

    2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

    3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

thanks for the reply setarip, but I deleted the original avi. after it got corrupted during the compression process...geez I didn't realize how risky a simple resize could be. I'll try it again after I redownload the original...one question: do I need to force keyframes during the compression?

VirtualDub actually crashed at the end of both tries (I didn't mention it the first time since I thought the crash was caused from running too many concurrent programs/processes, ran virtualdub by itself the second time)...error stated there was an 'access violation'...I checked the virtualdub website for info on the crash, but he mentions don't bother him if I am using the DivX MPEG-4 codec, cause its known to be instable, go figure...

"but I deleted the original avi. after it got corrupted during the compression process"

RULE#1 - Always work with a backup copy, never the original!

"do I need to force keyframes during the compression? "

        Nope
