How to fix this 'Error'... ?

Could someone please tell me how to correct this 'error'. How do I put this right. I have installed an email notifier, but whenever I receive email and then click the icon to access my account to read it - I get this message.

Where do I go to disable the 'Secure Password Authentication' so that I no longer get this 'error' message?

My browser is Firefox.

After fiddling around a bit I've now got a slightly different 'Error' message.

I've been tweaking things in Outlook Express - Tools - Accounts - All tab - etc

What is a 'Socket error' - and where can I make adjustments to this?

I'm glad to hear it's not just me.

Bigpond has definitely been on the blink lately. A couple of weeks ago I had a whole week during which for about an hour each morning my modem light would start blinking orange and the internet would disconnect.

And then Bigpond had the hide to try to sell me the BS that my cable connections were not fitting together snugly enough. What? - only between the hours of 8.00am and 9.00am every morning they weren't plugged in properly? ... helloooo... ?

Pig's arse!

And too often they slow me down to damn-near dial-up speed!

And there's other stuff wrong with my bigpond email account that I haven't mentioned here.

And then they bust me down to 64kbps after I had downloaded only 3 bitTorrent movies. Work that out!

I think I know what they live on at BigPond Headquarters...

Post Script: The Bigpond tech staff emailed me the solution to my above problem. Will post it here if anyone is interested.

Well, I copped another outage yesterday for about 8 hours (2pm to 10pm) - we must live close by.

Even had a techo come by and measure my signal stength. Happy to hear of any other solutions you might have.

As for going back to 64k, bigpond does throttle you in most of its plans after the maximum has been exceeded (in my case 10Gb per month).

As for downloading of torrents, please observe rule 6.

Bigpond's solution for correcting my 'error' message problem:

Click on Tools - Accounts - Mail tab - select the mail account having problems with - click Remove - Yes - Add - select Mail.

You're now prompted with a Connection Wizard.

Type in your name - Next - type in full bigpond email address - Next - make sure incoming server is a POP3 server.

Incoming: type in mail.bigpond.com... Outgoing: ditto.

Click Next - type full bigpond email address into the account name field - type in password - Next - Finish.

This solved my problem.

Well, bigpond was down for me again for most of yesterday (3rd day running). Also, my wife's email stops dead while receiving its first message and kills Outlook. Got NFI what to do.

That really is most peculiar. The manager of my local Computer shop says I'm jinxed - but it looks like I'm not the only one.

I once had an outage problem which I fixed by taking out the modem filter from the telephone connection and giving it a good cleaning with my airpressure pak. When I refitted it back into the socket - lo and behold the internet connection was good again.

I'm sure you know how to do an 'isolation test' to check whether the problem is with you, or with bigpond. Bigpond did this with me only a few weeks ago when the connection was dropping out all the time. As a result, they conceded the problem was theirs, not mine.

(Unplug all the telephones in the house. Unplug the modem filter from the telephone line socket. Remove the PC telephone connection line from the modem filter and plug directly into the telephone line socket.

If the modem's '@' light blinks orange - it's the fault of bigpond... and they'll send a technician to check your connections free of charge. If the modem's '@' light is a steady green - then the problem is with your own equipment and/or connections... and a home visit from a bigpond technician will cost you plenty).

Network outages? That can't be right. I haven't had any outages. Some dopey ditch-digger high on marijuana must have plowed his hydraulic shovel right through a conduit full of cables.
