Edit a DVD

I know I should be able to figure this out...but ...
I have backed up purchased movies before so I have software for that.
I have been capturing video from vcr tapes and editing them with pinnancle studio 9. Now I want to edit parts of a DVD of my daughter's dance recital.
I cannot capture it with Studio 9 and I'm just not sure how to think about this. Please help.

Have you tried outputting the stand alone dvd player into the inputs of the capture device. I have done this before and it works.

No, I don't have a stand alone hooked up here. I was just using the DVD drive.

It may (using a stand alone player) be an option if you can't get it onto a hard drive. What format are the files on the dvd?
