If files are viewable stored on hd?

A piece of advice I was given to help save turing blanks into coasters was to always view the saved files first from the hd folder before doing the burning. Can someone clarify if you are able to open and view the DVD files from your temp stored file folder, does this pretty much guarantee the finished backup will burn properly?
