    MPEG2 vs. MPEG1

    Hi all,

Sorry for the newbie question: I've got a movie that I downloaded thats in .avi format. I can view it on my computer with win media player.

I want to burn it on a CD-R to watch it on my DVD player. I used Nero to encode it and burn it in VCD(mpeg1) format. It works in my brand new dvd player(which supports CD-r, and MP3 playing)but not in any of the kids dvd players (which are all less than one year old but do not support cd-r or mp3 formats).

I was told to use nero to encode and burn the .avi to a SVCD and that would solve my problem. Well it does not work in the kids nor mine nor on my computer?????

Any ideas on what is going wrong and/or how I can convert a .avi file into something that will play on DVD players.

Do I have to get a DVD recorder for this to work or is there a way just to use Nero and my CD-r burner?

    Thanks

"I was told to use nero to encode and burn the .avi to a SVCD and that would solve my problem."

That's utter nonsense. All other things remaining equal, a standalone player that won't play a VCD most certainly won't play an SVCD.

    1) Some standalone players won't play burned VCDs (even if they do play commercially created VCDs)

    2) Most standalone players that DO play burned VCDs are "finicky" about which brands of CD-Rs they are willing to recognize as VCDs.

For detailed information about the capabilities of specific brands/models of standalone players, go to:

Video forums, video software downloads, guides, blu-ray players and media.
