700 mb sweetspot for xvid/divx

Hi all,
downloaded some xvid movies that are labelled as dvd rips, the are usually around the 700 mb size so they can fit on a cd but the quality is far better than what I can manage with auto gk. Anyone know where there might be a thread with the best codecs/settings/software to get these kind of results.
