Hi guys i'm looking to upgrade the burners that came w/my DELL DIMENSION E310. They're standard burners that come w/the pc. Anyways , in your experience what're some of the better burners i might want to look towards purchasing? Also do i have to take the ones I have in my pc out n put in the new ones, or plug them in through one of my usb ports? I'd like the best suggestion concerning installation so as to not compromise they're effectiveness and performance.
Hi Guys. What Burners Do You Recommend?

Hi dr_ml,
I am not sure what OEM Burner Dell is using in your E310 ... you can tell by downloading and installing this Freeware ... "Nero CD-DVD Speed 4.7.5.0"
Using this program will tell you what is your DVD Burner BRAND, MODEL, and FIRMWARE Version. Check it out and post back with this info. The some of the Experts at this forum can tell you if you can use your exisiting one may be for READING and Scanning.
If you are going to do some serious burning and scanning then get yourself a new DVD Burner ...
I personally have "BenQ 1640" for Scanning only and "BenQ 1655" for Burning. I have the 1640 as Primary and 1655 as my Secondary ....
Unfortuantely BenQ sold it's DVD Burner portion to Lite-On ... which that was a SAD day for me since these Burners are THE BEST in my book.
However, folks on this forum do use NEC, Lite-On and ... so I will let them to let you know which ones are the BEST from their experience.
Meanwhile the first 3 SITES in this Search has the BEST Reviews on various models ... read them and Look at the Conclusion page ... the one with the Highest Score I would go with that.
One more thing ... I do remember from my past reading that it is BEST for you to buy a DVD Burner that has BLACK TRAY ... for some reason more Accurate due to Laser reflection or something to that effect.
Good Luck and WELCOME aboard,

Hi Soup. I Have A Microsoft Windows Xp Media Center Edition 2005. Is That Samsung Your Burner Or Reader? Or Are They All Burners? Also Did You Get A Tech To Install Them Internally For You, Except For The External Plextor? Do You Use The Reader That Came W/your Windows Xp Pro, Or Did You Change Everything?SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Hi folks,
@ Soup ... Hi there!
@ dr_ml ... you are right ... You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks ... I don't know why I keep forgetting that ...
But as Soup mentioned it is the Best to go Internal ... faster response and make sure you check your DMA are set to MAX possible.
Also, I personally am not crazy about LG Burners ... the one that I had experience with (my buddy's External LG Burner) ... it never bunred consistently and had a LOT of HOT Spots ... basically Ruining the DVD Blank ... it would read Red spots via NERO DVD-Speed Scan mode ... so ...

welcome to the forum dr
afaik, up to the pioneer 110 (& all before), pioneer has had the best reader/burner.
the best i've ever used. scratched/damaged discs are a lesser problem, & burning has never been choreComment

The LG is my main reader unless I am in a hurry & then I will use the LiteON but as I have always said that I have more time than money, that doesn't happen to often. The Samsung SH-162L is my main scanner. The LiteON is my main burner & I installed that one but on this last install of the Samsung SH-S182D, (which I am just trying out & right now still iffy on), to many things had to be changed around, so I have a friend in the business who installed everything for me while I watched & learnt. The Plextor external overall I would say is the most flexible burner, burning everything you put in it, Dvd-R or Dvd+R well @4X or 8X.
Edit: BTW I nearly forgot, I think you would be really interested in the Disc Quality Scan Thread in Blank Media & Burning.Last edited by soup; 12 Jul 2007, 02:27 PM.

soup, i'm confused about the samsung, lg, and lite-on you mentioned. are these both readers and burners in one or are they separate. you mention 1 as a reader and then later as a burner. also by scanner do you mean it to be a scanner or just another term for reader. please elaborate on this. thanks.SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

if I might answer for soup,
after the price of dvd burners fell so much, it doesn't make any sense to buy anything else, so soup is just listing the various tasks that each dvd burner does best
some read slow and accurately, some faster but can error out with a problematic disk
by scanner he's refering to the ability to do a quality scan for pie/pif errors
on the burned disks, see the sticky refered toComment

also in build mode in imgburn is it the direct file which should be built or the folder it comes in? when i use it to build something from 1clk it always ask me if the folder is the root source or not. the file is actually in the folder, so do you suggest building the file alone instead of the folder which houses it. 1 time i built something and all that came out was actually the folder w/out anything in it. also when i do build a folder/file from 1clk using imgburn not all dvd players will play the copy. the folders or file will show on the dvd screen but you can't play them or anything else. what's your best suggestion regarding build mode w/what i just described?SAMSUNG SH-S203B, SAMSUNG SH-S223F,

Here is a link to some guides from the source that might be of interest to you.
Because the program is free & if you are up to wasting a couple of discs, I would download Nero CdDvd Speed v 4.7.5.0 & perform a create disc with both drives, take screenshots of the results, then post them here.
