Enhancing video quality after capture ?

I have home video on vhs tapes.
I am using an older version AverMedia capture card.
The card captures from the vcr to the hard drive in dvd format.
I use a transcoder to compress the video_ts file to iso and burn to disk with ImgBurn.
The video quality is not to impressive.
It has a soft focus and somewhat grainy. The original vhs tape played on the recorder/player is sharp and well defined.
My question is ....
How might I improve and refine the quality of the finished dvd?
A newer card, shorter cables, different software programs or all of these?

1: capture ur video at higher bitrate, even if ur doing it in dvd format capture at maximum thats possible by ur card/software.
2: now u can use few filters to enhance ur video using few programs say tmpgenc xpress or video studio.
dont think ull be getting super quality as vhs to dvd will be almost like VHS, u probably will see better video on ur television then ur computer monitor or big screen LCD/plasma.
u can also search the forum for vhs to dvd ull find many posts...

I would advise to capture using Huffyuv (if there is enough hard disc space) or M-JPEG (if hard disc space is less). I personally capture my analogue video using the Picvideo MJPEG codec at a setting of 18-19.

I transfered about 80 vhs tapes to DVD using a Toshiba D-RW2SU DVD recorder. Being that it's in real time anyway I found it personally to be easier as once it's recorded it's in DVD format already and then you could do what you want w/it. It also is enhanced a bit when transfered over. Not much but enough to notice. Audio's a whole different ball game altogether. Some restored old dvds can't even capture othe original audio or make it that much better. ie: HD/Blu-ray.
