Can an MPEG2 file be burned on a CDR and viewed on a DVD player?

Pardon my ignorance, but isn't DVD essentially mpeg2?

And if it is, can an mpeg2 movie be burned on a CDR and viewed on a DVD player?

Your patience and help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

A SuperVideo (SVCD)-formatted MPEG2 file can be burned to a CD and, if your standalone player can play SVCDs (and recognizes the brand of CD-R), you'll be able to view it on your TV.

You can use software such as TMPGEnc to convert your MPEG2 to MPEG2-SuperVideoCD format...
