trying to convert dvd files to eg avi

hello, im new to this forum

i want to put my entire dvd collection onto an external hdd to be able to easily access and watch them on either my computer or from a usb jack on a dvd player. i feel making them into avi files would be easiest.

so far i have used a software called dvd decrypter to get the raw information onto my computer firstly. it leaves me with VOB, IFO and BUP files. but where im failing is getting a piece of software that enable me to easily take all those files and turn them into an avi by simply selecting the folder that contains the IFO, BUP and VOB, choosing a profile (avi) and pressing start!
i have found software that can deal with VOB file and turn them into AVI but i was under the impression i needed the IFO because it contained important information, and no software seems to deal with both IFO and VOB to eg AVI.
or am supposed to just covert all the VOBs individually to AVI's and then add them together in a movie editing software such as windows movie maker?

i am sure i am being ignorant to the processes i need to follow and i know a very limited amount about these things, but i would really appreciate some advice/clarification.
    thanks for your time

SUPER © is a free enhanced 3D video converter encoder player recorder. It has built in all the required video codecs and audio codecs to encode from and into any possible multimedia format in 2D or in 3D. Rendered output files for PC, iPhone, Xbox, Android, PS3..

or use any dvd to avi programs available. one of the easiest i think that i use is tmpgenc xpress but its not free
Seems like as soon you buy somehing, v. 2 comes out 1.5 times as fast!..!

AutoGK will convert a vob set to an .avi. It will work on DVDs that have a "main movie" but not so well for TV episode type DVD.

Auto Gordian Knot simplifies the DVD to AVI/DivX/XviD conversion process for people new to Gordian Knot and overwhelmed by the vast options.

If you don't have to deal with subtitles AutoGK works quite well. I usually just use 92% quality and let it convert in 1 pass. If you're a stickler for quality use 2 pass mode.

edit: one thing to consider is the divx certified players are all going .mkv. If you go to divx.com and read up you'll see the next thing is "divx plus" which is .mkv format. The big advantage is you can play files that are higher than SD resolution. Just something to consider because the USB input deal may be a gimmick with a short life span on these players. They may just come out with an ethernet connection and display full HD res.
