VCD = Mpeg-1 compression, most newer DVD-players play this, I think.
SVCD = Mpeg-2 compression, some DVD-players support this.
Divx = Mpeg-4 compression, no DVD-players support this.

AVI = a container file format, avi is short for AudioVideoInterleave. AVI files can contain audio and video streams, compressed in many different formats.

      just a little more....

VCD - playable on dvd standalone / computer with software player - file called mpeg 1
SVCD - playable on some dvd standalones / computer with software player - higher resolution and quality than VCD - file called mpeg 2

Divx/Avi - not playable on dvd standalone only on computer using a software player.
