Can't burn a copy from a Dvd or from files on the hard drive

We use dvd shrink and the files are copied in a file with no problem, but when it goes to copy files through Nero 6.3 to our Mad Dog external drive, it always fails. What are we doing wrong??? Attached is a copy from the last failed try.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Hi and welcome the forum, verypuzzled!

Your installed firmware is rather old: http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1906

Update Nero - there was a problem with external USB burners with older versions. The update is free. www.nero.com

    You have a device that don't have DMA enabled - CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off

Posted in wrong forum - burning and backup would have been better.

      Now, onto your problems:

      1. Turn DMA on for your burner
      2. Update firmware
      3. What media are you using?

Check out my sig for links to do this.

EDIT: @cynthia - snap and beat me!

We are updating Nero, now. How do you turn on the DMA, is it any different if it is an external burner?

You can't - DMA is only for ATA drivers - you have an external one.

But try to enable DMA for your reader.

                  burning dvd

We have done the three things you have told us. Updated the firmware, updated the Nero and turned the internal DMA on. But the dvd still failed. Following is the report we had at the end of the burn.

Our media is a dvd video. We also tried burning music on a cd on this mad dog burner and it failed. We did it on our internal cd writer and no problem. Do you think we have a defective device?

If it's attached to an USB gate. Something else that is also attached to that gate? (Printer, Mouse, Keyboard...)?

If it's an USB -> try to update the drivers for that USB. Also see if there is any BIOS update for your motherboard that could indicate any problems with USB.

Can you assist in telling us how to update the USB? Nothing else is attached to the USB.
How do we find out if there is a BIOS update for the motherboard? I'm sorry we're not real computer savvy.
