Newb trying to make commercial player-compatible DVDs from backup files

I have Nero Recode as part of the Nero package I already own, so it's convenient. What I'm trying to do is take some of the myriad backup files I have in various formats and fashioning & burning hardware player-compliant DVDs. The DVDs I've been putting together play just fine on my computer via Power DVD or Media Center, but fail on my standalone DVD player. At what part in the process can I take over with Nero Recode if I'm starting from, say, an avi file? I know this is not the thread for this, but I'd really be grateful to find a url that would give an overview on what files need to be on a DVD and what special processing must be done on them in order to make them compliant. The player's manual states that these discs cannot be played:

    *2.6 and 5.2 GB DVD-RAM, 12cm (5")
    *3.95 and 4.7 GB DVD-R for Authoring
*Unfinalized DVD-R recorded on other equipment
*PAL discs (you can still play the audio on DVD-Audio)
*DVD-Video with a region number other than "1" or "all", DVD-ROM, DVD-RW, +R, +RW, CD-ROM, CDV, CD-G, Photo CD, CVD, SVCD, SACD, MV-Disc, PC, Divx Video Disc, etc.

What does that leave me (doesn't look like much LOL)

    Thanks a bunch

I have not attempted anything like this but I have a therory that it may be possible, but as a multistep process. I have seen in the forums here that there are programs available to convert .avi or .wmv to compliant DvD files. However, I have a therory that nero could do it all. If you were to use the other features of Nero to build your files into a compliant form, then use Recode to burn the compilation of your choice. I am still working on importing some home movies to try this though. It might also be easier to get another stand alone player with more options in compatibility.

if you want to do it all with nero...

use nerovision express to "export" your avi's to dvd compatible mpeg's

this process take a lot of time... but then when you are ready to burn to a disc that part goes fast

you don't really need recode for this project
