Which of these two produce the best results?

Nero Recode may produce slightly better quality output, but it won't be much. The difference you will see is in the speed...Recode is somewhat faster in encoding than DVD Shrink. The only drawback is that DVD Shrink is free, where Recode is not. Either way, my vote goes to Recode.

DVD Shrink is better to hit the target size in compilation mode. Recode very often gets to big or smaller than the wanted output size. Especially if you use the merge function in Recode. The Phoenix bird builds its nest which at the same time is its funeral pyre, and then setting it alight cremates itself. But it arises anew from the ashes transformed.Comment

My vote is for recode2, but don't pay for it just yet because shrink, although slower, does produces similar output as recode2. In any case, these two represent the best transcoders in term of quality output.Comment

that's not a very practical tool as the registry loads at bootup
seems damn near useless

I'm not familiar with the free version...only the one that accompanies the suite. I would definately give it a shot though, all you are losing is time if that is the case.
