    encoding, specifically with virtualdub

Okay I've tried a lot of tools to encode dvd's. I rip with SmartRipper using stream processing, then decode the ac3 using besweet. For video I go into dvd2avi and resave/recreate the .d2v file so the vfapi converter program will read it. I do the conversion, open it in VirtualDub and encode.

That works great, but it encodes at about 10-16fps in VirtualDub cause I think somewhere along the way it's forcing it to convert it to RGB. Is there anyway to keep it from doing that, any other tools?

Reason I'm using VirtualDub: I'm very familiar with it, and nothing else I found did the conversion right. I tried GordianKnot, i just plain hate that (I hate frontends in general), DVD2AVI, xmpeg, and flaskmpeg. Nothing except VirtualDub will do the framerate, aspect ratio, and/or deinterlacing correctly/at all.

I'd prefer to continue using VirtualDub, and it works, I have two movies encoded beutifuly, it's just so painfuly slow. Help Please!

use avisynth instead of vfapi and your proces will speed up.

why not do the cropping/resizing in gk and have your avisynth-script created which you load into vd manually later on?

      does using avisynth cutout virtualdub?

        no, why would it?

why would i recommend avs when you wouldnt be able to use it in vd?

initially you said you hated gk (or frontends) - i get the impression you're not very familiar with how gk works or how vd/nandub can transcode your sourcematerial through vfapi or avisynth.

I read the readme for avisynth and there were comparisons to virtualdub, so I assumed it was an alternate to virtualdub. but you're suggesting an alternate to vyapi? I'll start playing around with it and see if I can get it to do what I want with VirtualDub, thanks.

and as far as gk goes, yeah I'm not fond of frontends, if I want something automated I prefer to write a batch file or my own script for it.

          >>or how vd/nandub can transcode your sourcematerial through vfapi or avisynth

I did encode two movies in vd with vfapi, it was just really slow, that's why I was asking for maybe an alternate to vfapi or some way for virtualdub not to convert the yuv to rgb, so it'd be significantly faster.
