Cutting scenes in Vdub?

Ok I have a movie file that is about 740mb and I want to fit it on one CD-R.

My question is how can I use Virtual Dub to cut out parts of the file so it will be at or under the 700mb mark..

Any help is greatly appreciated..

Cutting with VirtualDub

Use v.1_4_10 or 1_4_9 (or 1.4D or earlier) as follows:

1)Load your original (DivX-compressed or otherwise) .AVI into VirtualDub
2) Set BOTH "Video" and "Audio" to "Direct Stream Copying"
3) Move slider to the starting point of the scene you wish to delete
4) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
5) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection Start"
6) Move slider to the ending point of the scene you wish to delete
7) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Go to next keyframe"
8) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Set Selection End'
9) From the "Edit" dropdown menu, select "Delete frames"
10) Save with a new filename

By the way, you can save a significant number of Megs by cutting off the end credits of the movie...

"The source video stream uses an algorithm which is not compatible with AVI files. Direct stream copy cannot be used with this video stream."

This is the error I got when trying to save it with a new filename after the editing.

In order to determine which codec(s) you need for a particular .AVI, you should do the following:

1) Load the file into VirtualDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (both video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

For future reference how exactly do I get a screenshot of just the information box? All I could get was this huge desktop sized pic

Use [Alt]+[PrintScrn] for window grapping.

You posted your question in the DivX subforum. This is why my response indicated how to properly split the file using VirtualDub.

The image you have provided clearly indicates that your file is an MPEG (MPEG-1) file and NOT DivX. Therefore, in order to split this file while retaining its MPEG format, use TMPGEnc as follows:

Under the "Files" dropdown menu, click on "MPEG Tools" and select the "Merge & Cut" tab. Make sure to change the mode to "MPEG1-Video CD" if the file is a VCD file (If it's not, leave it at the default setting of "plain vanilla" MPEG1). Load your file and enter a new (.MPG) name in the "Output file" box. Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL file's name in the window, which will bring you to the cutting area. Select your desired start and end points for the first half, click on "Okay" which will bring you back to the first window and generate (in a sequence of three automated steps) the first new file. To create the second new file, repeat the steps starting with "Then doubleclick on the ORIGINAL..." (be extra patient with the second half, as the program has to do more seeking to establish the beginning of the new file).
