N E way to encode dvd in sections?

I have a problem. Most DVDs are over 6 GB in size, and yet the largest partition on my computer is just 5.5 GB. Is there any software out there that i can use on windows 98 that can allow me to convert a dvd movie to divx / avi / mpeg in sections? Even a piece of software that acts as a recorder will be great. Any ideas?

You can rip the half of the movie (or the 1/3 of it) convert it to avi.Delete the vobs and rip the other half of it.Convert these vobs to avi too. After you frinish with the whole movie just join the three files with Virtual dub.
I think there is a guide in nicky page's guides about that.
Also I read somewhere (in divx-digest) that you can compress a movie from the DVD without placing it to your hard disk.

mpeg2avi for example uses a simple listfile for transcoding single vob files to one avi.

this listfile is nothing but a textfile specifying the path of each vob file.

for more on mpeg2avi take a look a my guide.
