virtualdub ERROR

hi,
beeing new to divx, i am trying to convert avi files to mpeg4.
Searching, i found virtual dub.
Downloaded it and run,
When i try to open an avi file, i get the following ERROR:

Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'dsvd'(unknown)
Virtual dub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec
to decompress video.DirectShow codecss, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suotable.

Can anybody please tell me what's wrong?

You are lacking the "dsvd" codec, download and install it.

well, thank you for the interest,

but, can you please tell me if it safe to use this codec?
I am asking this because as i am a PREMIERE user, some codecs have problem with it.

I am unaware of any problems with this codec, however I cannot provide any "guarantee"
