Oh no! I made a big mistake

    Hi all!

Yesterday i downloaded and succesfully installed the GAIN-supported divx 5.0.4 PRO software from divx.com, and everything worked perfectly.

BUT, then i did something really stupid; i ran ad-aware, which seems to have deleted the GAIN software. So now, whenever i try encoding dvd to divx, i get a message saying something like:

"This is the gain-supported version of divX. The gain software needs to be installed on this machine to use the codec. It seems that the GAIN software is not installed on this machine."

So then i uninstalled the divx bundle and tried reinstalling it, thinking that would solve the problem, since both the codec & the GAIN software was now installed.

But no, i still get the same message about not having the GAIN installed. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling it like 10 times.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem?

    Thx in advance

    Try restarting the system . . .

I already tried restarting the system after i uninstalled the bundle, and then again after i had reinstalled it; but the gain software still isn't "recognized" by the codec.

Thanks for trying to help though...

      Anyone else got any ideas?

Hope i don't have to reinstall XP just 'cause of this, that would be a real pain in the ass.

        Use XviD. Better quality results.

Did you try redownloading it as well, or just running the .exe again? If the latter, I would suggest uninstalling it, deleting the setup file(s), and redownloading it from divx.com, then try reinstalling it.

          Hi again.

          It finally sorted itself out.

Today all of a sudden the codec started working properly again, even though i have not done any changes to the system, since i tried uninstalling, reinstalling and restarting the system several times.

              Another Solution!!

Hi I had the same problem....

Glad to hear that I`m not the only one...
I tried all the above solutions but they didn`t work..

Then I tried to edit the registry, and found an old GAIN registration Key lying around..
After deleting it there were no problem with DivX (worked the first time, after reinstalling)

If you need a tool for editing your reg try searching the web for "Power Tools" or "Reg Cleaner"..

Hope someone can use this hint...

Yeah , i was thinking about trying to edit the registry too, but then all of a sudden it worked itself out, for no apparent reason.
