DX50 format??? HELP!!!

i recently got a avi file which i tried to compress with virtualdub. however when i open the file, it gives me this message:

"Couldn't locate decompressor for format "DX50" (unknown)

Virtualdub requires a video for windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codec, such as those used by Windows Media Player, ae not suitable. "

how do i get this VFW compatible codec to compress my file?
