Problem: .avi is Restarting my PC

I need a little help with this problem. When a DivX (.avi) is playing my comperter restarts. I don't know what is the problem. I tryed all codecs and codec packs, a lot of them. What can I do to solve this problem? It's realy making me nervous! Thank's

1) Load the video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

Actualy it happens with any .avi file I try, but I am pasting results from one video file, The Matrix Reloaded.avi. If need anythig else, just ask me, I'll try everything.

Again: any file I try, any AVI File, make my computer restart.

I tryed A lot of VIA Chipset and AMD Chipset Drivers for the motherboard and it's chipsets. Same for the Processor and AGP Port Updates.

Have you considered the posibility of your CPU overheating (and hence needing additional cooling)?

Yes, I did, but I use it for hours playing games, using internet, downloading files (for days or weeks) and it never restarts. But if I turn it on and play a AVI file it don't take half an hour to restart. And I used a AMD Program that show CPU Information. It only restarts when I play AVi files.

Based upon the movie title you've mentioned (and the sources for your videos that you've mentioned in your other posting), one can only speculate that you may have downloaded something that is negatively impacting your ability to playback videos...

Well, maybe, but I already formated and installed everything, I tryed changing my OS version. Now I'm using Windows XP, but I already installed Windows 98, Windows ME and Windows 2k. I downloaded all drivers and all programs everytime I reformated the PC. I don't know. I searched for Patchs and someting for any hardware or something for the AMD Processor. Maybe I just didn't found it. There is how to run this! I tryed Codecs packs, tryed installing codecs one by one and nothing happens. It just keep restarting. God, I hate this computer. But it only happens when I play AVi files, mpeg files play without problems. Everything works, only the AVi Files are restarting this hell's machine.

update your chipset driver - via 4in1/hyperion for example.

Already did it. Doesn't worked. I tryed all drivers for my chipsets and hardware. It's so strange, everything works but the AVI Files. I think it's a huge problem and it will not be that easy to solve. Thanks anyway.

i did experience this once myself.

trying different via 4in1 (in my case i used an older but probably more stable version on that particular mainboard) is one way to go.

moreover, set your bios to default settings because some ram-timing settings and/or caching options might be scapegoats as well.

Well, as you said, I tryed changing the motherboard settings to default but, I am a dammed person. Nothing happens. The computer continue restarting when playing AVI File. Thanks for helping.

are you a little bit familiar with your bios settings?

if so, try setting it to more moderate values - the defaults may not be ideal, though they most of the times solve problems like this.

and what about chipset driver?

tried different/older ones?

since your problems sounds very much like the one i faced once i should think the solution might be very similar.

Im familiar, I tryed some memory and AGP settings, nothing helped. I don't know what to do. No AVI file works. Short videos like music clips or funny comercials, for example, plays with no problem, but movies playbacks realy don't work. Mpeg works, but avi don't.

could you try ffdshow as playback filter?

i wouldnt know why this should make a difference but who knows.
