Authoring with Virtual Dub .....

Ok, I know how to add multi clips in vdub to make a compilation, (with AVI files)

But I have some mpgs that I would like to do that with, and and make a final output to avi, but when I go to append clip, it is grayed out... is there a way to do this with mpg's in virtual dub?

No...

So, what you can do (since you apparently know how to use VirtualDub) is use VirtualDubMOD (a modifed version that accepts MPEG-2 files for input as well as MPEG-1 and .AVI) to convert each of the files individually to .AVI - and then join the .AVIs...
