Hi.
Having read many posts on this forum that seem related to my problem, I haven't yet seen a post that provides a full solution.
The problem is this - I am encoding a DivX5.1.1 movie from an MJPEG source (although the source is of no consequence) in VirtualDub1.5.10. As the source was an old poorly recorded VHS, I need to up the brightness quite significantly. I am applying the brightness filter with a value of about 20 which provides a remarkable improvement in the preview in VirtualDub.
After I have encoded the video in DivX (either using 1 or 2 passes with all kinds of different options - I've tried loads) and playback the DivX in Media Player, the video is much darker than the VirtualDub preview, and in fact darker than the original. *However* - loading the encoded DivX file back into VirtualDub confirms that the video has encoded with the brightness that I intended!! Media Player and PowerDVD both playback the file much darker.
I thought about the following possibilities...
a) The overlay controls in my video card were set badly.... No, they are all the default values. btw: I have GF3Ti with Detonator 53.xx
b) Does VirtualDub not use the same filter as WMP or PDVD and does that account for the difference in playback? If so, is there a bug in the DivX DirectShow filter for WMP?
c) Could I have some other filter or something installed that is screwing up the output of the DivX filter? I checked... No.
d) Is there a bug in VirtualDub that means the filters don't work. No, because I can confirm the video has encoded properly by loading into VirtualDub again without filters.
I also encoded the video without any filters and the output in Media Player is, again, much darker.
Many of the other posts had replies that said to just turn up the brightness in the overlay controls for the graphics card. While this of course makes the video brighter, it also loses contrast.
Am I so wrong in thinking that this shouldn't happen? If any given pixel is certain colour... that pixel should STILL be the same colour when played back in Media Player if all overlay controls are left at 0??!
Please help!
Regards,
Steve.
