Which software is best for converting mpeg to avi?

I downloaded Flask, mpeg2avi and VCD Cutter. Which one should I use to get the best quality conversion?

Does Nandub actually handle decoded VOB files or does it only handle AVI files?

        nandub DOES handle vob files.

all you have to do is make them readble via frameserving through either vfapi or avisynth (flask is crap by definition and thus not to be taken into consideration )

so the first step would be using dvd2avi to create a project file

this file can either be converted into a pseudo-avi using vfapi or open the project-file in gordianknot, do the resizing and cropping and then save an AVS (avisynth scrip file), which can be opened in nandub.

How is the quality from Nandub comparable to MPEG2AVI?

px3's mpeg2avi can only resize using bilinear.
in nandub i haveprecise bicubic (which i always use) thus your output file is visibly sharper.

moreover, due to its smartbitrate controlling nandub is able to give you best possible results, which m2a only gave me with bitrates of ~2000+.

give it a try, it's the best quality you'll ever see!

If your going to use DVD2AVI to get your avi, then why do you need to use nandub. You might as well just put it through Virtual Dub as is. nandub is only a hacked Virtual Dub as far as I know (and thats not very far).

Nandub does 2-pass 3.11a encoding, which Virtualdub is incapable of. The result is one of the best you can ever get, provided you know how to use it of course.
