VirtualDub/Avisynth crashes

I'm having a problem with VirtualDub:

I'm trying to encode an AVI but VirtualDub crashes immediately after encoding starts. No error message, no Dr. Watson - it simply dies silently.

This problem occurs only occasionally with some movies, I have no clue what could possibly cause it.

I'm using Avisynth with an Mpeg2 source using resize and crop filters. Virtual Dub Version is 1.4.7, DivX Version is 5 Pro. Win2k.

Any ideas?

Are you using 'job control' ?

If so try doing one encodeing at a time.

Problems with virtualdub crashing when switching jobs using divx5 is not unheard of.

It works for me, but I have the same problem with xvid.

You might also try narrowing down the problem by trying another codec. At least this will tell you if it's a codec problem or a avisynth problem.

That's why I'm using Avisynth, Mr. Overlord

And yes, khp, the problem appears in conjunction with job control. I'll try an immediate encode.

Could you perhaps post the entries, in your virtualdub.jobs file, that corrosponds to the jobs that cause virtualdub to crash.

I don't think there is much chance that I can solve this, but I would not mind helping to narrow the problem down a bit.

Perhaps you can use an alternative way of frameserving? .d2v (DVD2AVI Project File) -> vFAPI frameserver is worth trying.

Thanks again for your help, but I decided not to keep the movie, anyway. It went to nirvana along with the job file. I will get back to your offer if the problem recurs.

This method I mentioned seems to give me fewer problems and I continue to use it even after I learned to use Avisynth. Otherwise, you can always get FlaskMPEG to work on mpeg-2 files too as it handles them comfortably. Next time...
