FAVC Update Thread

Anything over 4000 and the incidences I mentioned increase geometrically.
If I only had to remake the .ifo that would be fine, but often the encoding doesn't complete. Not sure why it happens but it's been plaguing FAVC for quite a while.

It's still verrrrry sub-optimal. Scenes which require a high BR aren't getting it. HCEnc should be fine with a setting of 8500.

blutach I thought I saw something when installing, (I can't remember what encoder or video software,) but it had a checkbox with something about "avoid bitrate spikes by inserting a frame delay" or something. Does that sound familiar? I'd like to use a higher bitrate but when getting incompletes Mr_Odwin advised decreasing the bitrate until the spike problem goes away. I guess it's probably dependent on the type of input?

Ok. In the meantime I did an avi => dvd conversion using HC at 8000 kbit and it processed without error. Maybe it's a quirk of QuEnc, which I was using almost exclusively. Now that
I've been using DVD RB I've started to use HC with best quality profile for most conversions. Nice results.

Yes, it's my encoder of choice now. I especially like the relatively new LUMGAIN and AQ settings.

Yet another crash!! Seems like FAVC works best if you have one input file. With 2 the odds are really high that it's not gonna' complete. As usual, it's subtitles making life difficult. I hate how it takes 2 hours to decide to crap out!!!

edit: I think what I'm going to have to do if I want to use FAVC to make a DVD with more than one source file is use custom size to make a 1/2 size DVD from input file #1 and do the same with input file #2. Then reauthor to put both titles on one DVD. A royal pain!!
If it wasn't for subs I could just append the input files first, then just make a DVD(I think)

Tried that and it worked pretty well. Just added a VobSub() line to the .avs to add hard subs and ran them with 1/2 DVD5 target size. Then authored the output titles to one DVD. Wish I knew how high I could go before risking a spike but the odds of success seem much greater doing one file at a time. I'll go with that for now I guess.

Just additional info, so far it seems like for a single input file HC best quality profile with a max bitrate of 6000 kbit is a safe bet. If you want to try a higher bitrate I suggest unchecking the option to delete intermediate files. If you get a crash late in the process you may be able to salvage most of the work.

I like the simple menus myself. I do have to admit the default background image is horrid though. Fortunately you can substitute your own. What I'd like is a simple menu adder thingy so you can add a menu once the conversion is successfully completed. Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like if you put a menu the odds of a crash increase. But it's just a feeling. I have no stats to back it up.

if your image back ground picture are small imgburn will not burn it and crash, use one that is big and high resolution then you will be fine

Mine is the same as Background2.jpg. 768x576 24 bit and coming it at 24KB.
It doesn't crash during burning. It crashes before the authoring or muxing is complete. Frustrating because sometimes you have complete vobs and just
need to generate an .ifo to fix it up. Other times the crash is before encoding is complete. Rather unpredictable.
