Thanks folks - trying a DVD now. Question, I see the audio stream chosen in the examples is the 6 channel as opposed to the 2 channel - why and what's the difference? Also, I don't have to pick any subtitles if I don't want, do I? I just see 1 picked in all examples....Lastly, the DVD I'm doing now has 3 VTSs - only the first has a 6 CH audio choice - is that normal? Is "CH" channel?

I'm new here on this forum and hope I'm not making a horrible first impression - I'm usually swifter than this (not by a lot)

6 channel is 5.1 surround sound - it is common for the movie to have this but not the extras. The 2 channel are stereo only (which might do you fine) - sometimes this is a mix of the movie's audio and others the director's commentary track. Listen and find out and don't just blindly take the 2 channel in order to save a bit of space.

You don't need the subbies but be careful of omitting them - especially the tiny streams in your own language - these are often subtitles of when foreigners are speaking and if you omit them, you will be in trouble - eg. Last Samurai where there's lots of Japanese spoken. A good practice is to keep all subbies that are in your own language.

Ah - thanks for the tip re: sub titles - and for the 6 ch tip for that matter!!

One last question (s?): Why would one choose to use this program - only after a bad DVD Shrink job or would one choose it instead of DVD Shrink all together? I really do like DVD Shrink but am intrigued at the notion of better quality.

Also, at its highest settings, how long does it take - 5 hours?

It's quality is unsurpassed - and if you have a low bit rate movie, a transcoder will choke bad - even a great one like DVD Shrink.

Time taken depends on your system and size of files - typical with HC, a reasonaly modern machine and a 2 hour or so flick is about 5 hours or so (although Hank and UncasMS reckon 3-4). So, it's an overnight job. Look at the Rebuilder forum (which is where I am going to move this thread) for comparisons on quality and times.

Thanks for moving the thread - was going to mention that...And I got my name back a few minutes after emailing - I'm very impressed!!

Speed is totally CPU dependent, correct? Basically, I have a laptop with a 2.14 ghz Pent. M and 2GBs of ddr2ram and a 6800 Ultra....

CPU/Memory/General speed of your machine/Size of disk being re-encoded etc.

I'd expect on that setup, a 5-6 hour job for a 2 hour movie.

in many cases the output quality will be way better using an ENCODER via dvdrebuilder as opposed to a transcoder

Once it's done its thing, do I delete the contents of the work folder?

the working path holds the temp files without sound

after judging the final output and its quality and having burning it delete the temp files as well

i'd not do it much earlier because you'll never know if you might face some problems and maybe could use the logfile or the avs (avisynthscripts)

Coasters

Ok, I made it to burning the iso and no dice, I keep making coasters - here are some screenshots of what DVD Decrypter says in the event it tells you someting. I'm letting it know what type of drive I have and what type of media I'm using - maybe I missed a step?

- does this file work properly?
try loading the the iso into daemon tools and then use something like powerdvd to play the files

- does dvddecrypter give any error?

- can the burned dvd be played on the pc?

The file does not seem to work though DVD Decrypter says the operation completed successfully.

I can't play the DVD on my PC - it appears blank but if I try to use the DVD again, DVD Decrypter won't let me.


The "status" in DVD Decrypter says "incomplete".

Haven't tried yet (I will if this next screenshot doesn't help) - but I just tried to burn the disc with nero, and this is what's on the unplayable disc -
