    Aspect Ratio

    I recently graduated from DVD Shrink to DVD-RB for my backups. The first movie, Inside Man, looks great. But I have an issue with The Forgotten and Brothers Grimm. They both work great in my PC, but not in my home theater. I have a Kenwood 5 disk player and a 65" HDTV. These latest backups with RB/HCenc have the correct aspect ratio on my PC, but they "zoom" in the home system. They appear to go from the original 2.21:1 to 16:9 which fills the screen nicely, but the zoomed in aspect ruins it for me.

    My DVD Shrink backups maintain their ratio on my home theater, and the only change I've made is using DVD-RB with HCenc for these latest backups. Does anyone have any ideas?

    Have you go the pan and scan bit set on the video attributes (or are you P&S on the remote)?

    Any preprocessing?

    AFAIK, DVD Rebuilder does nothing to the video atts unless you are doing a 4:3 to 16:9 ana conversion.

    Can you please post your INI file and log files?

        Try again without preprocessing. If you're going to use MenuShrink, untick enable menu encoding (not that it matters, IIRC it doesn't kick in till 50Mb).

        I do plenty of preprocessing with those tools too, but just to eliminate them as a source of the problem, do a run without them. You can blank any segment you like in DVD Rebuilder.

          Upon further investigation, I guess the problem is my DVD player. Although there is no pan&scan setting, the player definitely "zooms" in on the picture. I put the original movies in the player and the backup in my PC and compared. I never noticed before, but the picture from the player is cropped somewhat on the sides... even on original disks. The picture on my PC is the full width.

          So, my backups are fine. Its my stand alone DVD player that sucks... or I should say, it sucks even more than I realized.

            Read the manual - there is surely a way to make it play the DVD as intended.

              I decided to change settings, and found the problem...

              I have a widescreen TV, so naturally, you set the DVD player aspect ratio to 16:9 Widescreen, like the manual says... right? Wrong. Not if you want to see the movie in the original aspect ratio. The Widescreen option stretches the picture top to bottom, and until I started comparing, I ever noticed.

              By selecting the 4:3 Letterbox option, the entire frame of the movie is shown, with the black bars on top and bottom. That's my preference. I don't want the picture cropped or stretched. The picture is smaller, but at least it's not distorted.

                If you want to remove those "black bars on top and bottom" use TMPGEnc Plus, before you encode and the picture will not be distorted.

                  I don't want the picture cropped or "zoomed in" either. I want the entire movie, as intended. Unless you have a different sized screen for each movie, you're gonna get the letterbox black bars.

                    Strange setting. I would also have thought just matching the settings between player and TV would be sufficient.

                    Whatever works, I guess.

                      It's probably the player. It really bugs me when a player forces you to change something on the television every time it changes from 16:9 to 4:3. I took a very expensive high-end player back to the dealer once and exchanged it for a low-end JVC for that very reason.
