How much better is the quality of DVDRB ,the free version, compared to DvdShirnk or any other free program? If I want to just use the free version is it worth using DVDRB over DVDShrink. It seems to me that its a bit more time consuming to use DVDRB?
Quality compared to other programs?

As compared to DVD shrink its much better since it re-encodes the whole video itself using commerical/free encoders of your choice. Although this also means that it will take more time than DVD shrink, ofcourse.
DVD-RB free is a base version whereas the pro version has more features. Although you can still achieve most of them by using other tools like VObblanker before you process using DVD-RB free. -
There's many you can't, too, TR, like all the new encoding modes and beta viewer (I think).

same question
rj, I had the same question a few months ago. I went to DVD-RB free with longer movies (over 2 hrs.) and if I want a full back up. I used HCenc which is a real good free encoder. I also used a program to take advantage of my duel core PC and still use the free RB program. It takes longer since RB is encoding all the frames ( i believe) not transcoding like DVD Shrink does. A 2 hr. movie can take 6 hrs with a new fast computer (HCenc). I run a AMD X2 64 46000+ duel core with the duel program and I can get the same full DVD backup movie done in 2.5 hrs. I could do it with shrink in 45 mins but the quality isn't quite as good (full DVD back up).
Like TR mentioned VobBlanker with RB really is a good tool to blank sections of a DVD. I have used it to blank everything but the main movie and process with RB.
If I am only doing a main movie only back up I will start with DVD Shrink and look at the compression since sometimes you can get it close to 100% Shrink is still pretty impressive since it is now getting old.Comment

Forgot to mention
r_j; I forgt to mention with shrink I use DA and AEC settings. If you are doing only main movie you can get real good results. When I buy a DVD I watch it then say "do I really want the menus and the extras" I usually find that if the scene didn't make it in the movie then it isn't worth seeing (that is why editors are paid). I just backed up Anchorman after removing audio files and subtitles I had a no compression main movie backup which looks real good. RB is real good for the long movie (full backup) with low bit rates and TV show DVD's.Comment

You wonder these days what they do to the main feature's bitrate and Q with all these extras. I did Talladega Nights (R4) yesterday and its source was only 3,800kbps. There are enough action scenes in it to merit a much higher BR, IMO.

Bit rate
blu, I agree with you on the bit rate. My questions is why are the DVD's extras so full of deleted scenes that after watching them you see why they didn't make the show. Furthermore, motion menus, it is crazy how much space some of them take up leaving a lower bit rate to the movie.Comment

Thats why I normally only do movie and menu backups then use my favorite lil app MenuShrink on them and do not keep the audioNot registered Go here and click register to join the Digital Digest Forums

I agree DVDRB is great this is the tool I use for most of my movies.Hell I remember way back when, when I was thinking I could never figure out DVDRB then when I got to using it I found it's just about as easy to use as DVD Shrink .AQE and HC are very very good encodersLast edited by BR7; 20 Jan 2007, 08:20 PM.Comment
