    Shrink VS DVD-RB

    @jdobbs

    I went back and looked at the first DVD's I made with Shrink (2004). At the time the best setting was DA as AEC wasn't in the version I used. The quality was not the best as they were shrink to about 55% and they were action sports DVD's. I don't know if the Maxell (Japan) DVD's RITEK are failing but they look poor with halows around the figures and "pumping" for 2 hrs.

    DVD-RB and HCenc is the way to go with high compression. Just whish I had herd of DVD-RB at the time. Your write some pretty nice software. If I had the time I would redo them, but don't have much interest in watching them now.

    Thanks,

    AV

    Although no doubt about DVD-RB's supremacy in this domain but sometimes using DVD shrink with AEC on low compression movies makes them look more pleasing to the eyes than with DVD-RB and I do use shrink than DVD-RB under those circumstances.

    Shrink is still good to have

      I wont even use Shrink for that anymore For low compression I like to use QuEnc with Trellis Quantization enabled

          I can tell you honestly -- I have never seen a backup with a transcoder (Shrink or any other) that looked better than DVD-RB. There are some very-low-compression backups that may be hard to distinguish -- but better, for many mathmatical and "inside-understanding-of-how-both-methods-work" reasons I'd have to say I have my doubts...

            Clonedvd does a pretty good job at backing up movies. It's as good as CCE SP.

              :/ really? From the tests I've seen CloneDVD is absolutely terrible! It was pulled out of a comparitives test because it performed so bad in an earlier one.

                I have few avi file convert to dvd file by nero vision then use dvd-rebuilder, it does look better but it have problem that pause here and there ( when I play with vlc in the comp) but shrink will not let this happen ? if you can explain or how to fix it that would be great ?

                Thanks

                  Thats why I was talking about visuals and not internal/ what happens inside, that everyone knows that encoder is better than transcoder. But AEC does help shrink results, IMO.

                      When Trellis Quantization is enabled it does go slow for me also that is the only downside .But like you said the quality it puts out is outstanding.I am glad you like it

                        I'd go along with this statement if it was qualified with something like using "default settings"; otherwise, anyone can easily make a RB output look totally screwed with a few tweaked filter settings.

                            In my room I have a small TV just for myself. A Digitor G3450. And I can see the difference between a DVD Shrinked movie and one done with DVD Rebuilder using a good encoder.

                            It confuses me at how people can use transcoders much worse than DVD Shrink and then go to say it is near perfect quality. Are they blind?

                              @mike7778 - if that's all you're ever gunna watch it on and the compression isn't too high, you might be satisfied - each to his own, after all. But if you are watching it on a bigger screen, you'll want better quality. I project onto a 3-4 metre wide screen, and believe me, transcoders - any and all of them - are just not up to snuff.
