Help. How to download movies and burn to disk!

Hi there

I am new to this whole are of computing/movies.
If somebody can give me some advice i would be gratefull.

I have downloaded some movies on kazaa they have come in different formats mainly avi and divx. both of which i know nothing about.

My ambition is to know how to get these onto disk so i can play on my home dvd/vcd player.

Can anyone advise on the process and what programmes i might need and where to get them from?
