    AVI to MPEG

I've been trying to convert a downloaded AVI file to MPEG 1 using TMPGEnc so I can burn a VCD using NERO.

Howver I got an error message from TMPGEnc stating that the file was unsupported. Checking this board, I followed instructions posted here before and opened the file using VirtualDub, which only worked after I downloaded Divx 3.11.

However, I still cannot convert the AVI file. What shoulf I do next?

    Thanks

In order to determine which codecs (audioand/or video) may be required, do the following:

Load the .AVI into VirtualDub. From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information".

Post a .JPG screenshot of the information Window here or, type EVERYTHING you see (regarding BOTH video and audio) here.

It appears that whoever created the file saved a few Megs of filesize by "skimping" on the audio interleave (approximately 20:1 rather than the more conventional 1:1). The audio is probably CBR (Constant Bit Rate) MPEG-3 (as opposed to VBR [Variable Bit Rate] MPEG-3, which TMPGEnc cannot process), since you did not indicate that VirtualDub "offered to correct" the audiostream.

If my assumptions are correct, you should be able to resolve your problem by doing the following:

        1) Load the file into VirtualDub
        2) Set "Video" to "Direct Stream Copy"
        3) Set "Audio" to "Full Processing Mode"
        4) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Conversion" - and select 44,100Hz
        5) From the "Audio" dropdown menu, select "Compression" (If nothing is listed in the right side window, put a checkmark in "Show all formats") - select MPEG-3 and choose an acceptable sampling rate from among the 44,100 MPEG-3 listings (perhaps 128Kbps)
        6) Save with a NEW filename

        Let us know of your success ;>}

          Error message

          Dear SETARIP:

After making the changes that you suggested and saving the file with a new name I was able to open the file with TMPGEnc.

However, when I started the conversion process (or even if I try to play the new file with VirtualDub), I receive an error message named stream writing error (or VirtualDub crashes)!!

          What am I doing wrong?

          Thanks

I guess I should have asked this initially - have you been able to play the downloaded .AVI all the way, or are there playback problems with that original file?

As a "last resort", use VirtualDub to save the audiostream as a .WAV file By loading the .AVI and, from under the "File" dropdown menu, selecting "Save .WAV"). You can then load the original .AVI and the .WAV audiostream into TMPGEnc...
