encoding.. 4% in 1 hour... why so long?

I'm converting a DivX to Mpeg/VCD using Nero in the 'Video-CD' mode. the DivX avi is ~600mb. After 1 hour it only reached 4%. I dont believe it should take ~25 hours to encode...

Anyone know why its taking so long?

Could it possibly be my RAM (or lack of)? I only have 64mb... would more speed it up?

I'd suggest that you try using TMPGEnc (instead of NERO) for the conversion portion of the task - then use NERO for the VCD burning aspect.

is there a specific version of TMPGEnc i should get?

For the purpose of conversion to VCD it shouldn't make a difference. All of the versions from 1.1xx to 1.2xx to the recent 2.xx can handle this properly.

ok downloaded TMPGEnc 2.x and converted the file... took ~4 hours and ended up being 650mb when done... I burned it using NERO and got error messages, I went to play the file on my DVD player and the sound was fine... but the picture was totally screwed. When I played it on my DVD-rom the picture wasnt as screwed, but was stretched vertically......


when i play the actual file from my hard drive it plays fine....

ill go read some of the help/FAQ's to see if i can clear this up...

Under TMPGEnc do the following:

1) After clicking the "Setting" radio button, click on the "System" tab and select "MPEG1-Video CD" rather than the default, which is simply "MPEG1"

2) Under the "Advanced" tab:

A) select "Center Custom Format"
B) enter dimensions of 352x240 or 352x288
C) If you're in the NTSC world, select either 4:3 NTSC (704x480) or 4:3 525 lines (NTSC) - or, if you've got a widescreen video, 16:9 NTSC (If you're in the PAL world, choose from the two similar PAL options)

3) Under the "Video" tab, enter dimensions of either 352x240 or 352x288 (It should say "MPEG1" at the top of this page).
