Try first using TMPGEnc to convert the file to "plain vanilla" MPEG-1 format, as follows:

    TMPGEnc>>MPEGTools>>Merge&Cut

Load your .DAT file. Set mode to "MPEG-1 (NOT "MPEG-1 VideoCD). Save with a new filename.

    Let us know of your success ;>}

      dat file to avi continued....

i have tried tmpgenc but i only get half of the video and audio. this particular dat file is very difficult to convert. using virtualdub alone, i only get half the video and audio which is the same result like tempgenc. therefore, i tried avisynth. i get complete vedio, but audio is lost. please help me with your experty. thanks.

(I assume you've played the original VCD successfully from start to finish. If not please state so.)

Use TMPGEnc to demultiplex the file as follows:

        TMPGEnc>>MPEGTools>>Simple Demultiplex

        Load your .DAT file
Set mode to "plain vanilla" MPEG-1
Doubleclick on the audiostream and save with a new filename
Doubleclick on the videostream and save with a new filename

        THEN

Use TMPGEnc to multiplex the files as follows:

        TMPGEnc>>MPEGTools>>Multiplex
        Load the videostream
        Load the audiostream
        Set mode to "MPEG-1 VideoCD"
        Save with a new filename

If this new MPEG-1 file plays properly, use it to convert to .AVI
