analyse the avi format and install the apropriate codec

gspot or virtualdubmod will help you analyse - details can be found reading/searching the forum.

you will find hints on how to use them when searching for them through this boards search button.

www.google.com will help you finding the tools

        i was driving at this:

you seem to miss some codecs for the avis you want to convert.

if you want to check your existing files which codecs were used creating the file, then gspot or virtualdubmod will help.

if in doubt which codec to install or where to find the codec: go to my page (click the dvd guide button) and download tsunamis filterpack 399.

this pack contains most necessary codecs you'll need

avi to mpeg-1 can be done with tmpeg or dvd2svcd

Ok, I saw this thread, and I am having a problem similar... Ok, I have an XviD video that I need to convert to mpg1, and I got Virtual Dub Mod like you said to above Uncas.. and I can't figure out how to convert from the XviD to mpg1.

Could you tell me how I have to save it?

                  thanks.

vdMOD was meant for the *analysis* not the conversion part.

load the file into tmpeg or use dvd2svcd (it can create VCD as well) and use either one of those tools to convert your file.

OK, first I tried TMPGEnc, and I got this error:

Write Error occured at address 77F536F7 of module 'ntdll.dll' with 00000000.

Then it flips out, and brings up a save/open box, but the entire thing is blank, and white, then when I click cancel (because you can't see anything, it says this):

Read Error Occured at Address 0001349E of Module 'TMPGEnc.exe' with 00000000.

And then, I tired dvd2svcd like you suggested, and the only thing it was about to convert was .IFO files, and it wouldn't let me click GO.

Man, this TMPGEnc looks promising, and I hear so much about it, but then when you try to use it, it freaks out, and acts like it dosn't know what your trying to accomplish.

Based on your questions and statements, it's obvious (at least to me) that the various files you're having trouble with are files you've downloaded - not files that you've created. As such, you might fare better by posting your question(s) in the "P2P" sub-forum here, since it was created specifically for such posters and postings...

if you want to transcode an avi to mpeg1/2 you will need to have the codec installed, that was used creating this very file.

would you have the codec installed?

if not, do so and retry

if so, maybe demuxing sound and video from your avi might lead to a solution.

tmpeg has problems with some kind of vbr sound streams.
thus it might turn out worth your while to convert your avi's soundstream back to WAVE and then feed the video only and wave file into tmpeg SEPARATELY!
