Is it possible to creat a avi file directly from the vob files... if yes which software to use and how much time does it takes?

yep

to convert vob files to avi install the divx package and use flask
read the help files on the web site for instructions

time wise depends on your system

it takes me about 6-24 hours to encode 1 dvd with a pentium 3 450 cpu.
