50min AVI to MPEG won't fit on 80min CD-R

I think I'm trying to do something impossible.

I have an AVI that's 50 minutes long and I'd like to convert it to an MPEG-1 VCD format and burn that to an 80min CD-R so I can view it on my DVD player. The player is a Philips DVD724 http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/d...at_pss_eng.pdf

I followed the instructions here http://nickyguides.digital-digest.com/AVItoVCD.htm but the file is already 700mb and it's only 55% of the way through.

Do I need to use a different type of media? I'd rather not compromise quality but I also don't want to change disks mid way.

If you're encoding with standard a standard VCD bitrate (1150 kbps) then you should be able to fit 80 mins on an 80 min CD.

I'd check out some more guides at www.dvdrhelp.com, because upon reading just the first part of the guide you linked to, i noticed it says to use TMPGEnc ver. 12a which is very old.

I'm kind of new to this. I thought that perhaps the 80min meant for audio.

VCDs, just as audio (music) CDs, are based on running time, not filesize...

You mean even if the MPG file size (It's still converting BTW) turns out to be over a gig it'll fit on my 80min 700mb CD-R?

It's currently at 84% 1.1gb in size now.

Oh, and yes I used 1150 kbps.

Unfortunately, no. The top end is usually about 800-850 Megs.

Sounds like there must be something unusual about your "50 minute .AVI", as it shouldn't convert to THAT large an MPEG-1VCD file. Do the following:


1) Load the original video file into VirtualDub (or one of its many variants) or NanDub

2) From the "File" dropdown menu, select "File Information"

3) Post (here) EVERYTHING you see (BOTH video and audio information), or post a screen capture .jpg of the information box

When I first loaded the AVI I got a message. Perhaps thats my problem.
Looks like I can only attach one file at a time. I'll do the AVI info next...

Your video contains a Variable Bitrate ("VBR") .MP3 audiostream (that TMPGEnc can't handle properly), that you'll have to convert to a Constant Bitrate ("CBR") .MP3 audiostream, as follows:

Converting .AVIs with VBR-MP3 Audio for use with TMPGEnc

Using VirtualDubMOD to Convert "VBR" .MP3 to Uncompressed .WAV

1) Load the .AVI file into VirtualDubMOD (a different program than the standard VirtualDub)

2) From the "Video" dropdown menu, select "Direct Stream Copy"

3) From the "Streams" dropdown menu, select "Stream List" - and rightclick on the audio stream, then select "Full Processing Mode" - then click on "OK"

4) From the "File" dropdown menu, save .AVI with a new filename

Might I suggest trying out the kVCD templates for TMPGEnc found at http://www.kvcd.net

They are not 100% in line with VCD standards, but are accepted by most DVD players, and the quality is phenonemal.
