A DivX-compressed .AVI file is typically approximately half the size of an otherwise identical VCD file.

Quality really can't/shouldn't be compared because the SOLE PURPOSE of creating a VCD is so that you can view the video on your television - which has a much lower resolution than your PC's monitor...

Ahh i think i get ya!
so you cant play avi's on a stand alone DVD? becuase i've just created an mpeg and told the edcoder to make sure the file didn't go over 80 mins, the file size is 789mb so its useless, unless anyone can think of a way that i can fit it onto one CD and it will still be in MPEG....or a way or putting the remaining 89mb with the second file?

Cut the mpeg file using TMPGEnc and burn it to multiple cd's then play on your DVD player.

          to poolmaestro

789 MB is NO problem for a vcd

It is a matter of time rather then size

When you drag & drop a mpg-file into Nero (makin a vcd) you will see a TIME-line

Of course there is a limit and that supposed to be 800MB (i myself have one of 1:17 and 775MB)

To make a vcd you should have a MPEG1VideoCD otherwise Nero will not recognise it
