Need help with encoding

I have been trying to get any file to play on my DVD Player with no luck. I have a Toshiba sd-2200 which is supposidly able to play VCD's. I have read that an easy way to get one to work is have a divx file and use nero to re-encode. So I have selected the file and put into nero as a VCD in correct format (ntsb) and it will encode. But when I go to play in my standalone is won't read and says disk error. Any ideas? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

1) Although your standalone DVD player indicates that it will play VCDs, that's a reference to COMMERCIALLY created VCDs - and not necessarily burned CD-Rs

2) Standalone DVD players, if they will play burned VCDs, are quite "finicky" about which brands of CD-Rs thay'll recognize.
