Simply put, DivX can achieve a better compression rate than can MPEG-1 and hence the reason why there are many DIvX movies that take up only a single CD, compared to VCDs commonly requiring 2 or more CDs.
AVI, when it contains Divx, and Divx is actually MPEG-4, has a higher compressability than MPEG-1 or MPEG-2. That means with the same bitrate, and therefore the same space, you get better quality. Or for the same quality you can use a lower bitrate thus you need less space. And there is another reason. If you create a standard VCD or SVCD you are restricted in bitrate for video and audio. A VCD i.e. requires a video bitrate of 1150kb/s and a audio bitrate of 224kb/s. This results in max. 75mins of content on a 700MB CD Rom.

Ok, Thanks.
So if I get it, when I convert it for SVCD-for able to use it on my DVD, I convert it to Mpeg-2, that y it take 2 CD instead of 1 AVI Divx?
im having problems transferring the time machine avi to mpeg form, my audio is outta sync when i convert the file.640 x 272, 24 Bits, 133738 Frames, 23.976 Frames/Sec, 128 KB/Sec, DIVXMPG4 V3, that is the video format and the ausio is MPEG Layer-3,141 kBit/s, 48,000 Hz, Stereo. i had to convert the audio to wav form, then put the 2 back through TMPGEnc,but the audio seems to still be off< any suggestions???????????? im new at this and im getting to the point where im gonna give up
