Hello people !

I have a Digital8 camcorder and a Pinnacle board with IEEE 1394/FireWire connector for downloading the recorded tape on the PC and the required software Pinnacle Studio 7.
The problem is that at the best quality the downloaded *.avi file is about 13 GB / 1 hour. This is normal because it is uncompresed (this is what the documentations said) but anyway is not a viable solution because I would prefer to store my own movies on CDs.
So I've tried divx codec 5.0.2. I didn't get too deep into the settings but until now I wasn't able to get a decent quality. If you have any idea how to set the codec to obtain 1 hour of good quality on 700 MB please post it.

ok, use Techno's LAW:

1) DIVX v4 and 5 are CRAP, use DIVX v3.11alpha.

remember, if u capture and use compression @ the same time, u WILL lose quality.

so this is what Techno's LAW states:

"When capturing, use these settings:

YUY2 OR YU12
NO RECOMPRESSION
CD QUALITY PCM AUDIO
25 OR 30fps
320*240 RES OR 384*288

use AVI_IO software in order to capture over several files, as no recompression takes alot of space.

then, if u wish to use fast motion compression in the DIVX codec:

open virtualdub
open the video

goto video > compression > DIVX fast motion.

use these settings:

75 crisp
6000 bitrate.

Hit OK and OK.

goto audio > full processing mode
goto audio > compression

select MP3 with 44100Hz 128KBPS

then goto file > save as avi > and save it


otherwise, if u do not wish to do this, u may use nandub 2pass method.

open the video in nandub

goto video > SBC Options > bitrate calc

enter the final file size u desire.

Hit calculate. that is ur final bitrate.

click ok

goto video > SBC Options > SBC Settings.

enter 100 for minimum bitrate

goto the motion tab

for the "switch to FM DLL when motion is over..", slide down to 200.

in the compression level tab, enter 2 for min keyframe quality and 4 for max keyframe quality

now goto file > Two passes and save the stats and avi.

let it run, it will take time.

you don't really need G/K for this purpose, only when ripping DVD's.

As far as you capture from a digicam the analoge guide above wouldn't have helped you very much. If you want to compress the video after transfering it to the pc you should use VirtulaDUB/nandub. 1 hour on a 700-MB-cd gives you a bitrate of around 1400 kbps + audio. With that bitrate you can use a resolution of 640x480, but you shopuld use a lower res (512x384, 400x300) if zthere is a lot of action/movement in the video because that will cause a lower compression.

Load the video in VirtualDUB and apply the following filters:

- a deinterlacer (if the video is interlaced)
- dynamic noise reduction (makes video smoother and makes it more compressible)
- resize

depending on your cams quality you can also append some other filters to stabilize color and contrast.

Techno, you shouldn't have struck at benderman so...boldly and thoughtlessly. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not to openly criticising and attacking each others. I will try both solutions when I will have time (in weekend probably) and then I will tell you which was the best for me.
