Permanent subtitles guide

I'm searching for a guide that learns to me how insert subs permanently. You know, i saw a lot of divx [anime most] made with fansub ... so i was wondering how can i use the subs file to *write* permanently in my divx >:|

Sub-station Alpha to create the subtitle script, and then using the subtitler filter available from here, the script is permanently merged with the AVI you are creating.

SSA with subtitler is the most powerfull tool, but there also is an programm called vobsub that includes a filter (textsub) for virtualdub. It's very easy to use and maybe it's worth a look.
